Site Was Hacked Yesterday

This site was hacked yesterday, and a ridiculous post appeared about my demise. I am not 81 years old and I haven’t lived in Texas for 20 years. The hacking was not political, and had nothing to do with my views on climate.

Thanks to Marc Morano and Anthony Watts for quickly getting the word of the hacking out yesterday, and thanks for everyone’s concern. Apologies if you received any spam e-mails from the hacker.

I am keeping this post sticky for now, and new posts are appearing below.

…don’t be too hard on them, it was obvious

Does this mean we’re back over here now?

  2. avatar Dave N says:

    Yeah I received an email.

I figured it was fishy, since I don’t know of many 81 year olds that go bike riding. Still, today I was at the 80th birthday party of a lovely lady today who looks like she could very well be biking around ;-)

So was the post about the police visit bogus?

    • Was there a post about the police? I didn’t see that.

      • avatar Robert E. Phelan says:

Yes, Steve, a commenter calling itself “jonathonsmith” claimed to have spoken to you thirty minutes before you stopped breathing and that you were upset by a pp;ice raid related to your blogging activities. A nasty piece of work. Uhhh… Anthony Watts might have some additional information you’d be interested in….

  3. avatar papertiger says:

Sorry to hear you died. Glad to hear you got better.

You really should be careful in future.

  4. avatar Owen says:

Welcome back to the living ! What a cruel trick to play on everyone. I hope the culprit is forced to listen to a David Suzuki lecture as punishment. On second thought, that’s too mean, even for your hacker.

  5. avatar neill says:

    Steve’s a Denier.

  6. avatar lance says:

loved the comment about your ‘demise’ being greatly exaggerated!

was a bit of a shock initially when i got home late last night to see this passing post…then quickly got figured it out…

    welcome back…

  7. avatar theduke says:

Steve: I hope this incident increases your site traffic exponentially. I’d never been here before yesterday and was glad to find it. I’m going to bookmark it.

  8. avatar Jean-Paul says:

    Hello Steven,
I am very glad that you returned from the dead. You must be some kind of godly creature to be able to do such a thing. If your formula is still available, let all your visitors know. Even the warmists : we sceptics are not people bad enough to wish them evil.

  9. avatar tckev says:

Nice to see you back on site. Or maybe this is not you – who knows in the cybersphere?
Godd of you to email that you are OK, I hope it stays like that for a long time.

  10. Are you going to prosecute? I volunteer to be “bad cop”.

  11. avatar Geoff Brown says:

I welcome you back – and thank the whatever that you will still be here – enlightening and enlivening us.

  12. avatar Sleepalot says:

Steve, I’m glad you’re ok. I think should take a couple of days off. The warmists can wait.

  13. avatar Steve Keohane says:

Glad you are still with us Steve. I enjoy your site, and your occasional reference to Ft. Collins, my old stomping grounds. I worked at HP on Harmony into ’92.

  14. avatar John Whitman says:

    Steve,

I am glad to hear that your journey continues. May the skies be fair and the winds on the beam or aft quarters.

    John

  15. avatar Man Bearpig says:

    It’s a miracle ..

  16. avatar Rick K says:

Steve, welcome back — you look good!

I was one who posted my condolences and lamented your passing. I want you to know I was being totally honest and I wasn’t just being nice because I thought you were dead.

At least now you know who your friends are, right?

  17. avatar Eric Simpson says:

I also was sorry to hear you died. Although I knew it was bogus from the start, somehow related to the ‘server down’ issue were experiencing.
More important, you’ve got this site back and working properly (?). Interesting that it was implied by a commenter or hacker that a “new team” would keep Real Science up and going. No way would that be. So please cut back on the harrowing ski trips to Taos!

http://www.skitaos.org/ I was thinking, at the picture of Taos per the link, maybe you could ski the gentle ridge all the way down… and so avoid a snowy grave.

    • There is a gentle cat track down from the top, but it is very boring and long.

      • avatar Eric Simpson says:

As a famous person said, better to take the long way than a short cut to eternity.
        Better bored than dead.
Or was that “better red than dead”?
Oh, O wouldn’t say that, but instead “Better red than not red. ”
And “Give me economic and social justice, or I will have Holder sick the BPanthers on you all; and let’s terminate the coal industry as part my grand ‘all of the above plan’ to cripple energy production in America.”

        • avatar Robert of Ottawa says:

I went to this site and got the “…inaccessible…whatever” message. I thought hacking straightaway, but didn’t know about all the other stuff. Today, I check my e-mail and see the e-mail about Steve, age 81, dieing … or is that dying?

I’d like to hear what went on but it isn’t essential. Perhaps a jilted girl-friend? But speculation is not my intention; glad to see you back on line. It just goes to show how the internet has become the modern AGORA, where modern ancient Greeks argue, lie, cheat, shout and plead. It is the new public space. Ancient Greece invented the modern world; human nature has not changed .. their rules still rule.

I salute you Athenians and fight the eternal battle for right!

For people who do not know me, I am serious here. The Ancient Greeks invented the modern, Western, world, and I pay homage to them. But, it is up to us living people to ensure this incredible creation of of liberty, personal and from shiboleths, must be continued.

The keyword is LIBERTY, not equality, not fairness, not justice. With Liberty, a people have the right to succeed or fail. With any other option, they have no rights other than those bestowed upon them by their overseers. See Plato’s Republic. QED.

  18. avatar Hugh says:

I’m not dead, I got better.

A breach of trust seems worse somehow than a malicious anonymous attack. Glad to see you’ve got it all sorted out now.

  19. avatar kbray in california says:

I guess this was one of those “near” death experiences
where you get to see the bright light at the end of the tunnel.

    Welcome back… older yet wiser.

ps: is your son in Senior’s Soccer, 65 and older ?

  20. avatar John B., M.D. says:

Over the years, I’ve had a few patients die and then get better. Glad you’re still around, Steve.

    • avatar Eric Simpson says:

“I’ve had a few patients die and then get better. ” Not dead for long if you were to revive them, I would think.

  21. avatar MikeTheDenier says:

Wow, never thought I would get a chance to communicate with the living dead. I hope you enjoy “life” as a zombie. BTW, will the “dead” be able to vote this year? :-)

  22. avatar GregO says:

Hi Steven and welcome back to the living. I haven’t been able to post (I think!) so here’s another try…

    • avatar GregO says:

Hey it went through! Steven sorry to hear about problems with your fine site here. Keep it up; we are winning but we just aren’t quite there yet.

  23. avatar Andyj says:

Steven Goddard IS dead, as ever. Just in denial.

Steve, while you were up there, did you ascertain whether hell is exothermic or endothermic?

When you reached the gates of heaven did St. Michael of the Mann say to you “Oh my! You are a Hansen chappie. Let me GISS take you through the gates for a pearly necklace”. But you were not going to be taken in with his warming rhetoric.

No, seriously and oddly I was perusing this site when it went down after clicking back to page one. Didn’t get any messages of condolence but considered it hacked. There was a link on the front page and everything came back good for me.

I hope your colleague gets better.

    • avatar Eyes Wide Open says:

The following is reportedly an actual question given on a University of Washington mid-term chemistry exam.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let’s look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member
of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle’s Law
states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:

      1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

      2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, “it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you”, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct… leaving only Heaven and thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting, “Oh my God!”

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY “A”

  24. Well I have to say that when I visited your site yesterday I was very concerned but also sceptical…

  25. avatar Rogelio says:

look what CT has done so they are not prepared to accept defeat LOL
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/current.365.jpg SG have you got a copy of previous CT NH graphs urgent!
The’ve changed the graph so you cannot see this
http://arctic-roos.org/observations/satellite-data/sea-ice/observation_images/ssmi1_ice_ext.png unfortunately for CT and co the Scandinavians tend to be very honest and would not be prepared to try to deceive

  26. avatar Rogelio says:

Looks like the normal NH CT graphs (-0.102km2) are back again. I really don’t know what happened. Apologies if I $$$$ up

  27. avatar William Astley says:

    Steve,

Glad to hear you are well. Interesting and informative site.

    Best wishes,

    William

  28. avatar ACRC says:

Guess the science isn’t settled. There are doubters that you’re dead. Count me among the deniers.

  29. avatar Independent says:

Steve – congrats on the miraculous recovery! In all seriousness, it’s great to hear that you are OK. And thanks for all your insights and (above all) wit!

  30. avatar Robert of Ottawa says:

So, you have denied death, you denier, you! :-)

  31. avatar JimR says:

    Steve,

Pleased to see that Rumours of your death were grossly exagerated

    keep up the good work

    Jim

  32. avatar PhilJourdan says:

I was reading the obit, and thinking “Damn! And this guy was cycling the US!”.

Glad to see you are hale and hearty. They were only 3 weeks late with their April fools joke.

  33. avatar ozspeaksup says:

    really glad youre not deaded:-)
    i really was upset,
I like the wry twist that makes the inane warmist crud just a little more bearable with humour.
long may you live and annoy the hell outta the agw twerps!

What did you do at HP? I have done contract work for them from time to time.

I was involved in R&D process development in photolithography VLSIC’s into the 80′s, then went onboard with the 8111 chip, NMOSIII, we were told it was the first 32 bit CPU. Went on to investigate and fine-tune temperature measurement and control, which is one of the major control parameters in photolith. This work interfaced with NIST and the SEMATECH project (keeping the US dominant in IC fab). Spent my last couple of years investigating optical sub-micron microscopy and metrology.
