The latest sea level numbers are out, and Envisat shows that the two year long decline is continuing, at a rate of 5mm per year.
No doubt Al Gore will pass this good news on to all his viewers this afternoon. James Hansen expects sea level to rise a few mm per day, towards the end of the century. No natural heat source has been discovered which could produce enough heat to melt that much ice, so perhaps aliens will zap Greenland with laser beams.

“No natural heat source has been discovered which could produce enough heat to melt that much ice, so perhaps aliens will zap Greenland with laser beams.”
Yes, as the NASA scientist’s recently published paper points out – they will melt the glaciers to kill us, because we are destroying the planet……by melting glaciers. I guess they may really be mad because we are not melting them fast enough.

Sorry, no earth shattering kaboom.
I think the Martian looks a bit like Al Gore!!!!
Not only Envisat, JasonI & II are also recording dramatic sea-level drop. I’d say, in referring to ocean heat content, Elvis has left the building.
Sorry folks. Thermal expansion guarantees an overall increase in sea level rise for at least the next few decades. By the way, a 5mm drop per year is rather tremendous being that the sea level increase has been about 3mm per year. It would require removing all of the current ice melt and albedo effects from the sun to get the rate in rise to flatten across the entire planet. Even then, to get the levels to drop that much across the planet would require entirely reversing the process and somehow cool the planet. Think about it, if you heat water, it takes a long time for the energy to leave the water, it’s not instananeous. Even if a couple years show a decrease in sea level, that ocean drop is more than likely a natural variability caused by some other series of forces. Due to the lack of data and my personal feelings on sea level rise, a decrease like that would be caused by a slowing of the thermalhaline circulation by ice melt. This new slowing would temporarily cause the North Atlantic to cool showing an increase in ice and decrease in sea level in the Atlantic. Do you see these same effects occuring over Antarctica? Are sea levels dropping in the South Atlantic or in the southern hemisphere in general? Though unlikely as suggested by the AR4, a huge increase in local (continental scale) volcanic activity could produce a small decrease in air temperature and reduce the earth’s albedo in the affected regions. An increase in aerosols could also decrease the air temperature. Here’s some of the latest IPCC Report summaries as dictated by scientists in Kuala Lumpur – http://ipcc.ch/pdf/supporting-material/SLW_WorkshopReport_kuala_lumpur.pdf
Actually, it’s something even less dramatic – this change is WAY more likely due to ENSO activity. This kind of sea level drop occurs consistently with ENSO.
Well, if the IPCC would stop adding 2.3 mm for a subsiding Hong Kong tidal gauge and the University of Colorado would stop adding .3 mm, maybe there would be no crisis.
Dr Morner: “Then, in 2003, the same data set, which in their [IPCC’s] publications, in their website, was a straight line—suddenly it changed, and showed a very strong line of uplift, 2.3 mm per year, the same as from the tide gauge. And that didn’t look so nice. It looked as though they had recorded something; but they hadn’t recorded anything. It was the original one which they had suddenly twisted up, because they entered a “correction factor,” which they took from the tide gauge. So it was not a measured thing, but a figure introduced from outside. I accused them of this at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow— I said you have introduced factors from outside; it’s not a measurement. It looks like it is measured from the satellite, but you don’t say what really happened. And they answered, that we had to do it, because otherwise we would not have gotten
any trend! That is terrible! As a matter of fact, it is a falsification of the data set.”
I think I’m going to start selling real estate on the Goodwin Sands in the English Channel; they’ll be high and dry soon
Another decline for Phil Jones to hide.
But wait, didn’t Barack Obama predict this, i.e. that we’d look back to his inauguration as president (in 2009) as the moment that the oceans stopped rising?
And here was soooo hoping for ocean for property! I have the perfect bay in front of my house where I could start a marina. I only need the sea level to come up 304 meters!
If this trend continues, children soon won’t know what sea is.
ROFL!
Hmmm. I wonder whether this is connected to global cooling…
I agree with ProgContra on that it ther start of global colling .Which must be due to global warming .Everything that ever happens is causes by global warming. What ever happened to global climate disruption?
Why the hell can’t anyone plot without using Chartmanship?
http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/chartmanship.htm
You want me to plot a 5mm change on the radius of the earth? That would be pretty stupid.
Chartmanship is a mildly interesting subject on the link provided, until you see the bogus temperature graphs at the bottom of the page. That’s just plain cheating.
At least Steve didn’t resort to advanced Chartmanship.
The same thing – that is making the scale on one axis amplify the trend – applies to every AGW temperature anomaly chart I’ve ever seen including the “Hockey Stick”.
Besides I think they’ve really stretched the truth with their numbers of significant figures – but you plot 0.8 over 130 years and it looks flat unless you greatly amplify the temperature axis.
So – all’s fair in love and war.
What is going to happen to all these scientists if their theory falls over ? They’ve bet everything on it and if it unravels – what ? Sceptics haven’t invested their credibility as they have simply challenged a theory that lacks basic verification.
I think we should demand they surrender their Phd’s.
where is the water going? into ice?
martin, take a cold shower and look down……
…..water shrinks when it gets colder too
I was trying to eat a cookie when I read that!!!!
……LOL
LMAO!!!
Stop it please! I just fell off my chair and I think I broke it!!!!
Lol I just got that!!
“The Man Who Fell to Earth”‘s plan is working. We’re spending so much time measuring its depth we don’t see where the missing water is going . It might be interesting to pinpoint the destination of that much less H2O.
The chart only shows the last two years of data. Here is all seven.

wow, you guys are funny.
The link goes to data that shows an increase in sea level rise!!!
The source data is the same that over a longer period of time shows an even stronger trend of raising sea level.
I thought the sea level were not going up but you actually point to data that shows it does go up!
The institute you link to has a longer trend graph here:
http://www.aviso.oceanobs.com/en/news/ocean-indicators/mean-sea-level/
Seems the sea level is raising after all!
The ftp link to the envisat data at the op of the page shows the first entry as:
2003.976717 4.858260e-01
and the last is LOWER!
2011.529146 4.856059e-01
I guess some folks still do not know about the U of Co fudges and the Hong Kong buoy adjustment. Ignorance is not bliss.
But they still love to display it!
Actually, maybe the ocean is cooling more. Eighty % of the ocean’s water has been estimated at 4 deg C or less, the rest is 5 deg C or higher (?). So, since sea water expands below 4 deg C, will the sea level rise no matter which way the temps go? Deep water cooling will expand the ocean as will surface warming. So, is any of the sea level rise attributed to deep ocean cooling?
