In 2008, Mark Serreze bet on an ice-free pole because the ice was so thin. The top Norwegian polar scientist forecast an ice-free Arctic that year for the same reason. PIOMAS shows that the ice is only half as thick as it was in 2008, yet no one was forecasting anything being ice-free this summer.
Apparently the fundamental properties of ice have changed.
