Precautionary Principle : Don’t Leave Your House

100 Americans died today in traffic accidents. 300 died in cars since Irene struck on Saturday. Cars are far more likely to kill you than hurricanes. Do not leave your house, and never, ever get in a car.

You forgot the number of food related fatalities, The number of bathroom related fatalities.
More important the number of Doctor related fatalities. More people die each year while under the care of a doctor than just about any other related event!
The precautionary principle demands you not see a doctor, go into the bathroom, or eat food!

The Precautionary Principle is being used when you do not know the problem and are uncertain of a solution. In this case we are trying to clearly identify the issue and come up with a solution. The main concept here is that you are taking caution before anything harmful may or may not happen. We are not engaging in any policies that would affect the chemical; we are simply trying to take precaution to find out if it is harmful and what we can do about it if it is. On the other hand, this policy can have a negative effect if the chemical turns out not to be harmful. This will put the community into a panic and fear that would not be necessary. The Precautionary Principle would financially cost us since we are using more research about these females. For example we may ask them to find out why exactly they called out of work (example: respiratory reasons, or skin issues such as rashes). Once we get a generalized reason, we may want to research and spend time (which is money) to find risk factors.

Yeah, as I read the breathless rack-up of the Irene death-count, I kept wondering:

How many death certificates list “hurricane/tropical storm/tropical depression/weather” as the Cause of Death?

If some guy texting-while-driving skids off a wet street and mashes up a street lamp, is that counted as “Death by Irene” or “Death by stupid”?

Don’t forget not to bike anywhere and don’t cross the street!  Those are very dangerous activities, especially in the city – and even more especially here in the DC area where we have crazy diplomat drivers who can’t be ticketed.  The Precautionary Principle only makes sense if you look at one side of an equation only, while ignoring the costs of following it.
