NOAA’s Phony “Hurricane” Coming On Shore With 33 MPH Winds

[Update : NOAA has lowered their initial estimate of wind speed due to a "sharp discrepancy" between airplane and surface data. http://weather.herald.com/]

——————————————————————————————————-

NOAA claims the winds are 85 MPH, but none of the Weather Underground stations in the area report higher than 33 MPH winds. By definition, this is not a hurricane – and is just barely a tropical storm.

Uh Oh! You are going to keep track of my comment count! Whoo HOO!
I think they found locations where the wind was gusting rather than sustained But IDK!

  2. avatar Russfelix says:

I just checked, Columbia NC on the coast, Wind speed 32 gusts to 47. That is not a good summer thunderstorm here in Florida.

  3. avatar David Newton says:

Al Gore says this is the worst hurricane in the history of the Universe and always will be,   We must pray to Santa Kwanzaaclaus to spare the lesbian Eskimoes and the transgendered Eskilarrys, and the bi-sexual Eskicurleys.   Everybody is going to die.    Global Coolingwarmingnuclearwinterozoneholeclimatechangebothwaysathesametime was caused by George Bush and everybody knows it or else they are all racists.  Women, minorities, and children will be the ones who will suffer most when everybody dies….Do something Obama, save  us from Bush’s Hurricanes and Earthquakes, Oh Saint FEMA gimme, gimme,  Help me!  Help me, I’ve fallen, and I can’t reach my  Obama Statue…..gimmegimmee

Reports right now are showing much higher winds.

  5. avatar HuskerBob says:

I grew up in Nebraska.  When the wind stopped blowing at about 20 to 25 mph we all fell down.  33 was just a windy day.

  6. Google Hurricane Erin and 9/11
    Google Hutchison Effect and 9/11

  7. avatar JDiff says:

Here in Greenville NC this was worst winds since 1996 Fran and Bertha in my opinion. Numerous home washed away on Pamlico River. Washington NC inundated with river waters. A check of high winds in Nags Head and Hatteras for the day show 88mph. It was bad fellas, just a person living it and reporting on it.

Whoever this Goddard is, he’s a moron that doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s amazing how many non-scientists think they know more than experts in the field. People that make outrageous (and untrue) claims like this can get people killed.

  9. avatar Erick Irizarry says:

While I am not a meteorologist, I can read numbers as displayed on the wind velocity graphic. More importantly, does this trivial crap change the impact that Irene has had and continues to have? Does this “discovery” change the death count? Or the loss of power or fresh water? Or does it change the concern of family and friends who have someone trapped in Irene’s path? Simply, No.

So congratulate yourself and continue to ignore the reality that Irene has inflicted on some 65 million people in her path. Please nominate yourself for the Nobel prize in meteorology. Then Take that prize money and donate every penny of it to emergency relief funds on the East Coast.

There are lots of storms that affect millions of people. Doesn’t make them hurricanes.

This reporter jumps the gun a bit — there should be no doubt that a mid-range Cat 1 made landfall in NC. Just look at the satellite image. In spite of losing its eye, it was still very organized, with strong circulation and heavy thunderstorms around its center.

However, there is a saying that comes to mind: just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you. As this thing has moved up the coast, there appears to be a growing incongruity between initial forecast and reality. Massive amounts of dry air have been injected into it. Most of the storm bands are stuck over land, hilly land at that. Very high wind shear to the northeast. And the satellite imagery reflects this.  Take a look at the storm, and it appears as you would expect — moderate amount of circulation, with storm activity rapidly dissipating. At this point, it looks like a medium-intensity tropical storm, which is consistent with almost a day’s worth of land interaction, dry air injection, and wind shear. Yet somehow they’ve found some data somewhere to justify leaving it classified as a hurricane (it’s no coincidence that the wind speed in the initial forecast is the bare minimum required for Cat 1 status).

It’s starting to look like someone needs this to still be called a hurricane, and that’s the only reason it continues to bear that moniker.

lol, I thought there wouldn’t be any crazies here.  Nice layout.

  11. LOL, just saw on the Drudgereport that that Obama is taking control of the  National Response Coordination Center (NRCC), so it is all a bunch of smoke and mirrors to show that Obama is in control. Figures, this administration is making a mountain out of a mole hill, as I wrote in POLITICAL PROMISES: A REFERENCE MANUAL (http://www.blurb.com/books/2278349) one cannot trust a politician at his word.
