“A one- or two-degree increase in the world’s temperature may not seem like much,” she tells the students in the chilly auditorium, most paying attention rather than sleeping or texting. “But think of your own body when your temperature goes up by one and a half degrees. It means you’re getting sick.”
There have only been a few relatively short periods in Earth’s modern geologic history with temperatures as cool as they are now. Most of the time, temperatures were 10C warmer.
It is a wonder that any plants or animals were able to survive. They must have been all shriveled up.

Healthy humans are designed to have a body temperature that doesn’t vary more than a couple of degrees. Outdoor temperature, on the other hand, in many places can easily vary 100 (F) or more during any given year. In North Dakota, the temperature range was 180 degrees during 1936.
The fact that Dr. Hayhoe has made such a idiotic analogy (comparing human body temperature range to that of weather) should totally disqualify her from any consideration as a serious scientist.
People who believe this tripe about the Earth being terminally ill – are mentally ill. Fortunately for them there is a market for this brand of delussion at the moment.
When you say “a” idiotic rather than “an” idiotic, it makes the writer look idiotic!
Probably a malfunction caused by CO2!
deep breaths Andy….blow off that CO2!
minor! a typo. i make errs all the time that reveal me to be and idiot
yure cleerly an eggspert like i are – i woz a duns wunce miself
Philadelphia English (such as it is) prefers the use of “uh”. As in “You are such uh idiot, Katty Hay Hoe.”
I’m just wondering what might be going through the minds of students (or anyone else) when that analogy is trotted out… Perhaps:
“So, we should give the Earth a giant dose of paracetamol to lower the temperature?”
“Would it help if the Earth went to bed and took plenty of fluids?”
“Equating climate with human health? What’s next? Comparing a fish to a piece of wood?”
Here’s an accurate analogy: “Hayhoe” = “Regurgitator of irrelevant analogies”
Big Al used the same lame analogy, “The Earth has a fever!”.
Unlike people/snakes/ants/poley bears, Earth has no “optimal” or “ideal” temperature. Earth doesn’t care. Earth does not need to reproduce. One day, the Sun will go to red giant, and the Earth surface temperature will rise to 0.553 gazillion Degrees (F/C – who cares?). The atmosphere will be vaporized and flung to Pluto and the lithosphere will revert to molten magma. C’est la vie!
Listening to people like Hayhoe/Gore makes one want to grab their lapels and shake vigorously. W. T. F.
yes, exactly, the p bears can take a flying leap
I’m speechless. And they laugh at Rick Perry.
And what about the clueless “Neela Banerrjee” who deep throated it without question.
