Guardian : Carbon Tax Will Benefit Australians

They will gain moral superiority and end 50 million years of droughts and floods.

Carbon tax bill is good news for Australia
Once the dust settles, the majority in Australia are likely to find that the bill will benefit them

Thanks to a narrow victory for the government, Australia now looks likely to join the EU and New Zealand in introducing a comprehensive policy to make carbon polluters pay for the damage they cause. This is very good news. It has been an uphill battle, with the opposition and business lobby all but claiming that the sky would fall in should the bill be passed.

But once the dust settles and the lamenting subsides, the majority of people of Australia are likely to find that the bill passed on Wednesday benefits them. Much of the money raised from the carbon price of £15 per tonne of emissions will be recycled in the form of tax breaks and compensatory payments.

Australia’s energy system is among the most polluting in the world thanks to its heavy reliance on coal, but Australia’s climate is vulnerable to the impact that climate change brings. Acting to reduce emissions is in the country’s self-interest in the longer term

Being out in front has its advantages and confers a moral superiority but there will always be forces of conservatism who will be made to feel uncomfortable. It is therefore more important than ever that countries in the early adopters group work together to defend their actions and encourage more into the fold.

“The head of the European division of Tata Steel of India has warned that a planned £1.2bn investment programme by his company in Britain could be put at risk by the UK government’s “over the top” climate change policies directed at heavy industry.”

    Yep the “green investment” magnet.

The citizenry pays the 15 pounds per ton by way of higher costs on energy, goods, and services, and then they might get “some” of it back in govt. approved largesse? Sounds like such a good deal… not

      What’s the old saying?
Government of the imbeciles, by the imbeciles, for the imbeciles shall soon perish from the earth.

  4. Let’s get this right. A “carbon tax” is intended to make carbon-based energy more expensive, thus reducing demand, and forcing producers to use “cleaner”, more expensive alternatives. . The Oz Politburo have decided to sweeten the pill by compensating most households for the additional cost. Does anyone see a flaw in this policy?

    • avatar Ivan says:

      Where’s the flaw?
Just because they assume that people are stupid?
Plenty of evidence to support that argument at the moment, unfortunately.

You can see more from the author, Byrony Worthington, at Bishop Hill here:

She was awarded a life peerage to the House Of Lords by the socialist UK government – for services to destroying the UK economy – via the suicidal 2008 Climate Change Act which she drafted.

It would be more correct to say that deer hunting benefits the deer, than “Carbon Tax Will Benefit Australians”. At least the survivng deer benefit.

  7. If Australia really wanted to help poor people, they would start printing 100,000,000,000,000(AUD) bills & handing them out in the streets.

    Hyperinflation benefits poor people, right?

  9. avatar Charles Higley says:

I defy the idiots in the Aussie government to put reality based value on the “damage” caused by CO2 emitters. It is impossible without simply outright lying to the people.
