Arctic Cannibalism

The Daily Mail reports that global warming is turning Polar bears into cannibals, because there isn’t as much ice in the Hudson Bay as there was 30 years ago.

As usual, no actual research seems to have been done by the scientists involved. Hudson Bay ice is almost identical to thirty years ago.

It seems that all the cuddly animals are downright unfriendly.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17hGhaE0YgU

There are even stories of elephants bashing babies on occasion.

In the past we didn’t know why. Now we know they are frustrated that the Senate won’t pass Cap n Trade.

    • avatar Eric S says:

No no… operative for elephants or lions is “on occasion.” Africans didn’t go out of their way to kill off lions, but the Inuits know that p. bears are brutal maneaters, and needed to kill them off. This is normal fare for the P bears. An Inuit from the dailymail article:

A male polar bear eating a cub becomes a big story and they try to marry it with climate change and so on, it becomes absurd when it’s a normal, normal occurrence.

  2. avatar MikeC says:

There was a grizzly bear documentary making the rounds of the “Save the Planet” TV channels a few years ago. It specifically said that sow bears have to protect the cubs from male bears and there was footage of the sow fighting off a male. This was in an area in southern Alaska where salmon was plentiful, so it wasn’t a hunger thing. Why would polar bear behavior be any different?

    • avatar Eric S says:

I don’t know why P Bears are different. But good point. Maybe there’s hearsay about cannibalistic grizzlies, but you never see any photos of grizzlies eating their own.

That is a noble species, the grizzly. The grizzly can be trained, to the point where you can hang out with them, and they can perform in movies. PBears no. As Al Gored in a previous thread noted, PBears may learn to avoid getting into trouble near remote towns — but that’s not the same thing as training, and performing in movies!

      • avatar Mike Davis says:

        Eric:
P Bears and G Bears are different shoots of the same family as the P Bear just adapted to the ice conditions where they live. The two groups can and do interbreed.
The P Bears have to be more aggressive to survive in the harsh conditions they live in and would probably eat more vegetation if it was available but plants do not tend to do well in the conditions in the regions where they live. The main problem at this time is probably over population. Of course we could always move the Natives and researchers out of the region to make way for more Polar Bears.

        • avatar Eric S says:

“P Bears and G Bears are… of the same family.” OK, but how does this help the cause?

          • avatar MikeC says:

            Here’s the video.

Of course these people aren’t scientists and there is no way to tell if the male is going for the cubs or the carcass.
Googling grizzly bear infanticide finds a lot of theorizing but no actual documentation that I could tell by quickly scanning.

          • avatar Al Gored says:

Look closer. That phrase you googled must lead to documented cases because there are plenty.

Bear populations are first limited by food (which determines their reproduction; fatter fall females have more and healthier cubs in winter dens). Then, in the absence of human predation, their populations are limited by competition between bears, primarily expressed by male bears (and rarely females) killing other bears – not just cubs or young bears but primarily them. Besides direct killing this competition also pushes lesser bears into poorer habitat areas where they are less likely to survive.

(In some areas, like Yellowstone now, wolves are also serious food competitors for carcasses.)

This also applies to black bears, and research on them has suggested – much to the concerted denial of some people – that selectively hunting large adult males – e.g. trophy hunting – actually helps increase bear populations by allowing more bears overall to survive. However, that also brings other problems due to the resulting population instability and the impacts of too many young males so it is not that simple.

Bottom line, as everybody seems to get here, is that it is not some unique AGW freak behavior.
It is a bear-eat-bear world especially when food is limited, and some individuals bears are just ‘psycho’ murderers or whatever you want to call it – just like some individual people.

          • avatar Eric S says:

@Al. Good points you make. And at this point I’m just going to go along with what you say, since I don’t really know. I just did a couple of quick googles… oh, and I DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express a bit ago.

  3. avatar Blade says:

You think animals are bad with their children …

    • avatar Mike Davis says:

That is a fantasy. Read about Syria and other conflicts in the Middle East. It is the women and children most affected!

      • avatar Blade says:

        True dat.

Also Nazi Europe. I have tried, successfully, thus far to avoid posting that kind of video. I suppose at some point we’ll have to in order to educate the current crop of climate’tards.

  4. avatar Andy DC says:

A few missing ice cubes have turned our cuddly fur balls into crazed killers! Just goes to show how hypersensitive their habitat can be.

  5. avatar Gator says:

“A wide range of animals gobbles their own kids — polar bears, burying beetles, hamsters, wolf spiders and a range of fish species. Such actions are puzzling, given all the time and energy that goes into producing offspring that are supposed to continue one’s genetic legacy. The researchers noted this work highlights the potential conflicts that exist between parents and offspring in animals…. As humans, we tend to think of parental care as a very loving and nurturing behavior, which it of course is most of the time,” Klug told LiveScience. “But sometimes there is a darker side to parental care, and understanding behaviors such as filial cannibalism often requires a very close look at what’s going on.”

    http://www.livescience.com/2264-parents-eat-young-big.html

So, if your dictionary has pictures, next to ‘filial cannibalism’ you should find a poley bear.

    • avatar Eric S says:

Gator, your link is fine here, but note that as far as AGW,LiveScience (as well as ScienceDaily, SciAmerican, PhysOrg, Discover, on and on) is among the enemy. The “scientific press,” born from MSM journalists and the liberal “scientific establishment,” puts out false “ready to use” propaganda articles daily. Yes, these groups believe in the leftist notion, as expressed by Senator Tim Wirth, that de-carboning is “the right thing to do” regardless, and think creating false propaganda is also the right thing to do.

A technique, used by D Appell and other frontline deceivers, is to imply what you said is false, and just drop a link to one of an endless # of propaganda “science” articles. It is very difficult nearly impossible for you to prevail when their bs links can be passed off as correct. And your support links? If it comes from a “skeptic” site, it is belittled, despite being correct. It is so hard for us, then, to find “legitimate” links to support our positions.

  6. avatar Eric S says:

d appell is up to his old tricks. And I mean tricks.

Note that usually, as I understand, we can’t even get by the screeners at the pro-AGW propaganda sites. Remember Appell is not doing it for his own edification. By engaging him at skeptic sites, and those like him, we lose. WUWT blackballed he. He should be blackballed from all skeptic sites, methink. Plenty of Cry Wolfers can be found to do battle with on more neutral ground, like the LATimes Forbes etc.

Nevertheless, it looks like you took this bs artist to the cleaners, this time.

There is nothing unusual or unprecedented about our current climate or how we got here.

    lol

    • avatar Gator says:

It is so easy to show them for the frauds they are. I once engaged Noam Chomsky and was amazed at what a mental lightweight he was when it came to climate change (I did not get a chance to gauge his other knowledge). The left promotes these people as great intellects, when the truth is that they are no smarter than most average Americans. But they beleive their own accolades and are not prepared for an armed combatant. The truth is a very powerful weapon when wielded against tyranny. It is a fire that burns as well as illuminates.

I employ them to illustrate to fence sitters what a complete sham the ‘science’ of AGW really is. Works every time. ;)

      • avatar Eric S says:

“It is so easy to show them for the frauds they are.” For you, great! Though if you did it at neutral (not skeptic or warmist [but probably liberal MSM]) sites, it can do some good… as far as fighting the bs where it matters. Although, possibly you couldn’t as deep an interaction there. So-k.

Right, they are typically far from stellar intellects, and often flat out unqualified. See The Delinquent Teenager Who Was Mistaken for the World’s Top Climate Expert.

        • avatar Gator says:

Hey Eric! You are correct, it is very difficult, if not impossible to hash out a thread on MSM sites. I find that over half the time my comments do not make it past moderation, not because they are confrontational or abusive to the privelege of posting, but simply because the MSM does not want the truth to be known. I am always surprised at how many people come to sites like this to read the threads and see the debate laid out. It is for the edification of the bystander, and the sake of future generations that I tolerate interaction with the likes of Appell.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
          Edmund Burke

Make no mistake, though they may believe what they are doing is right, these people are evil. To them, the ends justifies the means. Period.

  7. avatar Gator says:

    Well played Sir Eric! :)
