New Melt Record for Greenland Ice Sheet: ‘Exceptional’ Season Stretched Up to 50 Days Longer Than Average
ScienceDaily (Jan. 21, 2011) — New research shows that 2010 set new records for the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet, expected to be a major contributor to projected sea level rises in coming decades.

So why did sea level fall dramatically in 2010? Record ice and snow melted, and the water disappeared off the planet?

lol, they aren’t very bright, are they?  If the ice melts from the Greenland ice sheet, most of it won’t go to the oceans, it’ll stay right there in Greenland.

From wiki——”The weight of the massive Greenland ice sheet has depressed the central
land area to form a basin lying more than 300 m (984 ft) below sea
    level.”

Now, I’m not sure the ice actually depressed the rocks, but the fact is Greenland is shaped like a bowl.  If melted, most of the water would stay right there.  Of course, I’m very curious as to how much melt one would expect in mostly sub-zero temps, but that’s for another discussion.

The same with Antarctica (basin shape). But since 1 degree rise in Global Temperature wouldn’t matter a s**t since it is – - – 10′s of degrees below there. LOL! These so called scientists have their  head up their a***.

On another thread the alarmists were much more specific about this catastrophe …

“Scientists have calculated that if the entire icecap eventually melted, the seal level throughout the world would rise 17ft., flooding every port, and thousands of square miles of land.”

Note the extremely sloppy ‘science’ involved. No parallel calculation of water that would remain landbound in freshwater lakes (e.g., Great Lakes in the USA). They assume the island is convex, as opposed to a concave container. If that were true, water and ice would have had a difficult time accumulating there in the first place.

The question is how much would sea level rise were Greenland to melt completely? It would be a fraction of the total they calculate. The remainder could easily be managed by building dams and generating their wonderful green energy. Since it would take thousands of years to melt, they can take their time too. So Greenland should welcome the thaw and so should we. Here is why …

      (1) Greenland could become the #1 supplier of freshwater to the world. Little plastic bottles with Vikings on the label would become all the rage.

      (2) Greenland could become the freshwater lake capital of the world, Greenland’o'lakes, Europes #1 tourist resort, swimming, fishing, snorkel, scuba, etc.

      (3) Greenland could become the breadbasket for much of the world. Agricultural splendor with endless miles of wet fertile farmland on. Wild and Farm animals could roam happily.

      (4) Greenland would have all kinds of green energy from the hydro due to the dams that are saving the world from Sea-Level catastrophe.

      (5) No more doom and gloom stories about their ice sheet. It’s gone, we survived. Adios, RIP.

First it should be “sea level rise” not rises.  But more importantly why in coming decades?  Where doed the water go between now and 12 years from now.  Or six years from now.  Water that runs into the sea will/or can cause it to rise, right then not later.  I must be missing something.

PS I like the new page.  Nice job Steve.

Not seeing any figures showing how much ice accumulated on the Greenland ice sheet during this period. Without those, the melt figures are completely and utterly meaningless.

Even with accumulation figures provided it would still be meaningless because both would be extrapolated based loosely on real world data! Very loosely! To the point of bearing no resemblance!

It’s so hot the meltwater evaperates immediately… and raises sea level through precipitation… come on, that’s an easy one LOL

  5. avatar Joseph says:

I am thinking that the ice melts and then turns in to CAGW water which has special properties.  These properties are known only to the warmists and they will they us as we need to know.

    The water migrated to Artesia.
