TONY EASTLEY: German scientists say the ice at the North Pole has shrunk to its lowest level since 1972, and possibly the lowest level in 8,000 years.

They are talking about Ice VOLUME, not coverage, and can make a strong case for their assertion. Whats going on underneath the ice is significant, as relatively warm currents melt the floating ice pack from underneath too. Summer melt on top seeps through the plates and doesn’t return either. So while ice coverage won’t equal the 40% open in September 2012, as it will recover from the (La Nina effected) abysmally cold winter temperatures of this year, possibly next year or almost certainly in 2014, it will “surprise” everyone with close to a 45% or greater September open Arctic.

NSIDC shows a significant increase in multi-year ice area since 2008.
Right, and it will be about 200,000sqkm greater in area! But the volume (area x depth) should only increase slightly, as depth won’t recover to the same extent as the surface area, setting up the future reductions referred to above!
The loss of MYI is mainly due to drift out of the Arctic in the winter. Very little actually melts in-situ

I don’t have a lot of trust in their volume estimates. I think its a lark invented to keep the alarmism going.
How is it that they can determine the thickness of ice on water when they can’t determine thickness of glaciers? Seems to me the ice on land would be easier to measure, but they still failed miserably at that. But, ice on water, they know?
It’s actually quite easy (& accurate too!), as floating ice has a well defined ratio between the portion above and below sea-level, with even pressure ridges eventually sinking to an isostatic level. Then Simple radar altimitry does the trick, and the height ratios deliver volume numbers on demand!
And Prince Charles believes every word of it as he did in 2007 and will row across the ice free arctic this summer.

No. he’s too busy polishing his hypocrisy, and objecting to windmills in his general vicinity, whilst telling the rest of us we have to put with them, because it’s “good for the planet”…
How did that radar altimetry work 8,000 years ago?
Same way as it did 450,000 years ago!
If one group knew what they were doing and provided accurate information about true ice conditions they would receive all the funding and the rest of the groups would be eliminated.
No group provides more that their “Estimate” of what they think the ice is and has done.
The 8,000 year claim is BS in so many ways. Any claims about ice volume are also little better than possible “educated” guesses. Most likely we are receiving WAG from the “Experts”.
If they knew what they were doing they would be doing something else.
