Good one. Nice crossover references to the so-called non-existant 1970′s global cooling Ice-Age alarmism.

Does anyone know how to pull the plaintext out of Google Newspapers?

  2. avatar Paul H says:

If temperatures do start to drop off significantly the Alarmists really will have something to be alarmed about.

  3. avatar Andy DC says:

Cold will just be considered global weirding, which is entirely the result of a warming planet. NOAA’s top scientists say it’s so, so it must be so.

The March 1, 1975 statement comes from Science News, not Science itself, as Connolley is fond of pointing out. What Connolley forgets is to provide the full statement: Most climate scientists now expect a full-blown 10000-year ice age. I wonder why.

  6. avatar Edward Spalton says:

By 1974 the CIA produced a report saying that there was a “scientific consensus” about imminent, catastrophic global cooling. European Russia, Northern China and Canada would be buried permanently under hundreds of feet of ice and snow unless human intervention prevented it. The scientists had also convinced the CIA that they had a reliable method of climate forecasting. A microfiche copy of this report is in the British Library, I believe.

Some credence was given to this view by the commodity upheavals of 1973. The Autumn-sown Soviet wheat crop had been totally destroyed by severe frost and the Soviets conducted a very successful clandestine buying raid on the Chicago market to make good the shortfall. I was in the grain trade at the time so remember it well.

The amusing thing is that some of the scientists who were so keen to freeze us all in the Seventies are the keenest to roast us now – and they are in very influential positions. They have made a lifetime’s career of frightening people about the weather and, boy, warming has paid far better than cooling! I think the real problem is the poor level of education in our credulous politicians.
