I can substantiate this. My father took his first active service flight on a RAF Wellington bomber in July 1941. “Stiflingly bloody hot!”, apparently. He did say that in some respects it was a welcome relief because he’s never in his life known a spring as cold as that year – he used to play semi-pro soccer and he remembers standing in goal freezing his balls off.

He particularly remembers his first demob winter, ’46-’47, where he had to wear practically every item of clothing he owned in front of a fire made from burning the family encyclopedia. But he swears the summer of that year was as least as hot as the big stew of 2003 (though nothing beats ’76).

1933-34 were also “sweltering” summers in the UK, he recalls. The annual family holiday was taken on the Essex coast in July, where he remembers his parents saying it was as hot as 1921 (I guess you had to be there!).

He reckons nothing has changed at all in his lifetime as regards climate. I asked him about the earlier springs we’ve been getting, and he said they had the same thing during the war, apart from 1941.
